Choosing Words Thoughtfully and Carefully

I've been putting a lot more thought into everything I do lately. Truth is, we get so busy that we tend to walk through our lives only half awake and not always paying attention to the things in our paths.

One of the things I've committed to doing is watching what I say, not just my language (i.e. not cussing at all), but my tone and really thinking before I say something. More importantly, I'm trying to think better about the words that I choose to use. Some examples:

I'm starving
That drives me crazy
I hate that

Instead of saying things like that I should say "I'm hungry" b/c really, I'm not starving as I can typically eat what I want, when I want, I'm not in any danger of dying. Instead of saying "that drives me crazy", I should just say "I find that annoying/irritating" because nothing can really be so extreme that it causes me to actually be insane. Additionally, saying "I hate" anything is pretty extreme, I'm going to try to use dislike or just say "I don't care for asparagus, thanks!" (Ok, maybe not with asparagus, I think I really do HATE asparagus, but you get the idea)

I just really want to be more mindful of the things that come out of my mouth. Every word we release has the potential for good or for ill. We probably could all do better at making sure we measure our words carefully. I, for one, don't want mine to come back to haunt me someday.

No more South Park, for me

I know you're not going to believe this. I'm not watching South Park anymore. I mean, ever again. It is hilarious to me. There is always tons of great social commentary and no one group is ever safe from it. However, I just have realized lately I don't laugh as hard as I used to and I can't consciously watch it anymore. It's more than just the fact that they have little kids saying "GD-it" (everyone knows I despise that phrase), but that's pretty much the main reason. I started realizing that they say this nearly every episode and whatever they wrap that phrase around is so inherently funny that I laugh when I normally would never laugh when someone says that word. It really bothers me, I can't stand to even hear my friends say it without commenting or asking them to not say it around me (fortunately, most choose to honor and respect my wishes).

So, farewell, Eric, Stan, Kyle and Kenny. Farewell, Randy Marsh and Mr. Mackie and Mr./Mrs. Garrison. Farewell, Cartman's mom. Thanks for the many years of laughter and snorts. You are all probably the toughest thing I'll ever give up. Even tougher than fountain Coke . . .

Calling all cyclists - you need Wheeltags!

I don't typically do posts of this nature on my site, but I found out about a great product that I think is very cool and innovative and wanted to share! I know that many of my friends are either cyclists or they know cyclists. Christmas is coming up around the corner, and I have a great idea for you! My friend Matt is an avid cyclist and a great graphic/Web designer, he started a company with two of his fellow cyclists, Wheeltags. So, if you know a cyclist, are a cyclist, or just like to play one in your spare time, you should head over to Wheeltags and make an order!

Let me back up just a little for those of you that aren't familiar with what Wheeltags are.

Wheeltags provides wheel decals that are applied to the rim of bike wheels and come in many designs, styles, sizes and colors. The word “tags” comes from graffiti art, as artists sign their work with a signature that is referred to as a “tag”. It is what separates them from other artists and helps to identify their pieces in urban settings. They are as unique, distinctive and complex as the graffiti itself. Wheeltags communicates a sense of individuality and uniqueness, in an edgy, urban manner.

Wheeltags customers are bicycling enthusiasts, recreational riders, weekend warriors and competitive athletes that want to differentiate themselves (and their bikes) from the rest of the group. They are both women and men, living active cycling lifestyles.

Be different. Be unique. Be an early adopter and influencer within the cycling market. Make a statement with your bike.

Heartland Film Festival Review - Ocean of Pearls

Heartland Film Festival has been dear to my heart for some time now.The people, the movies, the amazing talent; all of it comes together tocreate an 8 day extravaganza that is unparalleled in my experience. This year, I wasn't fortunate enough to attend opening night, or theawards gala (the highlight of which, to me, is always Judy Stewart(daughter of Jimmy Stewart) and her zany antics), but I did get toattend two movies and was assigned the task of blogging about saidmovies. This blog post is about the movie Ocean of Pearls.

Oceanof Pearls is about a young doctor, Amrit, that was raised in the Sikhfaith. His father is a prominent figure in their community, for hisvolunteering and strong faith. He is considered somewhat a grandfatherto everyone in their Sikh community. The movie begins in an airport.Amrit is traveling to Detroit to give a lecture and is told my securitythat he has to remove his "hat". He explains that his turban is notmerely a "hat", but takes a great length of time to take off and asksif he can just be scanned by a hand held scanner, rightly pointing outthat if he was hiding anything in it, that would pick it up. WhileAmrit waits for the head of security to come, a small boy eating achocolate bar goes into anaphylactic shock and Amrit has to convincethe security guy to even let him through to help the boy as he laydying. After performing an emergency tracheotomy with a pen (obviouslyno one had a knife as they were passed security in an airport). Hearrives, late, to his lecture, rolls up his sleeves and begins to givethe lecture in his blood-stained shirt. He is then offered a positionwith the newly formed transplant hospital that is hosting the lecture.

Amrittakes the position, despite leaving his family and his girlfriend. Idon't want to reveal too much about the movie, but a few things happenover the next hour or so that really moved me. It shouldn't havesurprised me at all how much this movie moved me, I have not seen amovie at Heartland yet that did not. The movie is about a struggle withfaith, and one of the main themes is compromise. Listening to thedirector speak afterwards he said something about once you start tocompromise, the next compromise becomes that much easier. How true. It's a concept that I have struggled with greatly and I think that'swhy the movie moved me so greatly. Throughout the movie, Amritstruggles with his faith, seemingly rejects the traditions of hisreligion, and yet ultimately moves back towards them to begin anew.

Isn'tthat what many of us do? Another quote in the movie when his father istalking about the Sikh Holocaust in the '40's is his father quoting aman in a Christian camp when the Christians are begging them to cuttheir hair and assimilate so that they will not be butchered. The mansays "I do not fear death so much as I fear the death of myconscience." No matter your religious, moral, spiritual or fundamentalbeliefs, we all have a conscience. It is surely a slippery slope whenwe begin to compromise our beliefs in order to make other thingswork/happen. We all struggle with these questions, we all have doubtsand ask questions. This movie is a reminder of the things that canhappen when we do so, and a reminder that the possibility of a journeyback to those beliefs and values, back into the fold, so to speak, isnever out of reach.

I could give more of a synopsis of themovie, but I'm instead going to post the trailer so you can watch thebeauty of it unfold. Watch for this movie to come out. I can tell youthat the impact on me is yet to be told, for I was already on the swingback to those fundamental beliefs . . . and now find myself with thatmuch more inspiration to continue down that path. Although the moviealso deals with prejudices and misunderstandings of religion whenfollowers dress a certain way, for me the message was about honoringyour faith and traditions, and being aware of why you do so.

Tranquil One

A smile, a laugh, a hand slipped into mine
A touch, a gaze, a whisper into my soul
His peaceful presence is like a long dip in a placid lake
And yet, his tranquil demeanor sets my mind ablaze
Creating eddying pools of desire that seep into the recesses of my being

Things I once desired slip away
Superseded by a cognizance of more halcyon adventures
I touch my lips to his and taste his sweet giving
My senses awakened, I yearn for more, and receive
I want him, to feel his skin and breathe it, deeply
To run through these days with him and experience
To twist our minds together, reveal our naked beings
To revel in the splendor of life
To dance together through the coals of any turmoil
Most of all though, to just know him, this . . . Tranquil One.

The Prophet - speaks of Pain

I have posted about The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran before. I've been thinking alot the last couple of weeks about Pain. Pain shapes us just as much as love, joy and honor; sometimes it shapes us more. A few weeks ago I spoke of some great personal pain to my dear close ones two days in a row. It was a bit emotionally taxing on me and I opted to keep that pain out in the forefront of my mind so that I might deal with it a little better and help to put it to rest, rather than to stuff it back in the trunk, only to be taken out and examined when I deemed necessary. I'm happy to say that I feel it dissipating, slowly yet strongly.

Whether pain has been an elusive friend or a constant companion to you, I think what Gibran says about Pain in The Prophet is very wise. I've copied it here:

And a woman spoke, saying, "Tell us of Pain."

And he said:

Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.

Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain.

And could you keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life, your pain would not seem less wondrous than your joy;

And you would accept the seasons of your heart, even as you have always accepted the seasons that pass over your fields.

And you would watch with serenity through the winters of your grief.

Much of your pain is self-chosen.

It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self.

Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquillity:

For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by the tender hand of the Unseen,

And the cup he brings, though it burn your lips, has been fashioned of the clay which the Potter has moistened with His own sacred tears.

Long Black Veil

There is no denying that Johnny Cash has an amazing version of this song and so do several others. But ya’ll know that Dave is my favorite musician in the ENTIRE FREAKING WORLD. An amazing song by TWO amazing men. Seriously, I have goose bumps, so glad that I came across this treasure today:

Lover Lay Down

Lover Lay Down

Spring sweet rhythm dance in my head
Slip into my lovers hands
Kiss me wont you kiss me now
And sleep I would inside your mouth
Dont be us too shy
Knowing its no big surprise
That I will wait for you
I will wait for no one but you
Oh please lover lay down
Spend this time with me
Together share this smile
Lover lay down
Spend this time with me
Walk with me, walk with you
Hold my hands your hands
So much we have dreamed
And you were so much younger
Hard to explain that we are stronger
A million reasons life to deny
Lets toss them away
See you and me we
Lay down look see
She and he
By my lovers side
Together share this smile
Lover lay down
Oh please oh please
Please lover lay down
Oh please lover lay down
And you weep lover lay down
Cause its over lover lay down
Say love, say love, say love, say love, say love
Could I love you
Could you love me
Darling its all the same
til we dance away
Chasing me all around
Leading me all around
Leading me all around in circles
Say.......

~Dave Matthews Band (my favorite version is from Live at Luther College)

One of those songs that the words speak for themselves.
